CUMBIASOUND - Exploring the colorful connection between Africa and South America

 Cumbiasound is not just a Cumbia band—it’s a living, evolving sound experiment born in 2010 on a sun-soaked sidewalk in La Dorada, Colombia. Swedish producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Fridell and his Colombian wife were sharing an ice cream when the supermarket speakers burst into funky Colombian rhythms.

That moment sparked the vision for Cumbiasound: a project weaving together Colombian cumbia with jazz, reggae, funk, Afrobeat, space sounds - connecting Africa and South America through music and love.

The first tracks quickly gained attention in Mexico’s digital underground, leading to the debut release Calzones Largos (2011) with Chilean rapper Boogie Castillo (Daniel’s longtime collaborator from their 90’s hip hop adventures). Together, they fused raw rap with psychedelic cumbia grooves, carving out a fresh and distinctive sound.

Through the years, Cumbiasound evolved into a shape-shifting collective.

Highlights include:

• VOL. 1 INSTRUMENTALES (2020), featuring trombonist Erik Axelsson, a deep dive into pure instrumental cumbia.

• Cosas del Universo (2020), expanding the lineup with Lis Flores Varela (Chile) and Congolese singer José Pereelanga, whose Afro-Caribbean power helped propel tracks like Mas Paz and Vaivén past 2.5 million streams.

• A string of experimental singles on Prisma Music, from lo-fi instrumentals to electronic explorations.

• La Máquina (2021), venturing into Cumbia Rebajada and Afro-Colombian roots, with standout tracks OVNI and Cumbia Enamorada.

• Amazonas (2024), inspired by the Colombian rainforest, blending traditional Afro-Colombian drums (Alegre, Llamador, Tambora) with modern production.

• 2025 collaborations with Japanese percussionist Mutsumi Kobayashi (Minyo Crusaders, Mumbia y sus Candelosos), releasing fresh new takes on Afrobeat, salsa choke, deep accordion cumbia, and more.

Today, Cumbiasound is a global sound explosion—a journey through Afro-Latin rhythms, psychedelic textures, and cross-cultural collaborations. At its core are Daniel, Boogie, Lis, and José, supported by a blazing live band that transforms your venues into vibrant dance floors.
